How to pass the EASA A2 drone exam

The A2 certificate of competency is the most common next step after A1/A3. With structured preparation — topics, practice tests and full timed simulations — most remote pilots pass on their first or second attempt.

1. Know the official exam format

The EASA A2 theoretical exam consists of 30 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes. You need at least 75% to pass — that is 23 correct answers.

The exam is administered in person by your National Aviation Authority (NAA). A1/A3 can often be taken online; A2 requires a classroom session at your NAA.

2. Complete A1/A3 first

A1/A3 is a mandatory prerequisite. It covers open-category fundamentals: regulations, airspace, meteorology, human factors and operational procedures.

A2STS provides the full A1/A3 question bank free — use it before moving to A2-specific topics.

  • 246 A1/A3 practice questions across 8 EASA subject areas
  • Learning mode with explanations
  • Quick tests to identify weak topics

3. Focus on A2-heavy subject areas

A2 questions emphasise meteorology, UAS flight performance, ground risk mitigation and technical knowledge. Many candidates underestimate meteorology — it appears frequently in both A2 and STS exams.

  • Meteorology — wind, visibility, cloud base, temperature inversions
  • Technical — LiPo batteries, payload, flight performance
  • Ground risk mitigation — distance to uninvolved persons, low-speed mode
  • Airspace — geo-awareness, U-space, controlled zones

4. Follow a 4–6 week study plan

Week 1–2: study each A2 topic in learning mode. Week 3–4: topic tests and mistake review (SRS). Week 5–6: full 30-question timed simulations under exam conditions.

Aim for 15–30 minutes of focused study daily rather than cramming the night before.

5. Use an EASA drone exam simulator online

Practice under real exam conditions: locked answers, server-synced timer, no hints. Run at least three full simulations scoring ≥80% before booking your NAA exam.

A2STS simulators mirror official question counts, time limits and the 75% pass threshold.

6. Exam day checklist

  • Bring valid ID required by your NAA
  • Arrive 15 minutes early
  • Read each question twice — distractors are often plausible
  • Flag uncertain answers and return if time allows
  • Remember: 23/30 is enough to pass
